Field guide 01 / The first step

Your first ABH hike,
without the guesswork.

You do not need expensive gear, a trail résumé, or somebody to come with you. You do need the event’s required footwear, water, and weather protection—and a willingness to show up.

01 · Choose well

Pick the route that fits your body today.

Start with the event page. Read the distance, elevation, difficulty, start time, price, terrain notes, and packing list. “Beginner-welcoming” does not mean every route feels easy; it means the details are clear and nobody needs to prove himself.

If you are returning from injury, managing a health condition, or unsure about the terrain, choose a shorter event and check with your own health professional when appropriate. ABH can explain the route, but it cannot make a medical decision for you.

02 · Reserve

RSVP before you make the drive.

Every attendee needs a confirmed spot, even when an event is free. Capacity protects the group pace and lets the host plan responsibly. Use the email address attached to your membership if you are claiming a member benefit.

Follow the public event page and any attendee updates. If ABH sends a private gathering point or confirmed-group detail, keep it within the confirmed group.

03 · Pack

Bring the boring things that make a good day possible.

  • Trail shoes or athletic shoes with dependable traction
  • The amount of water listed for that route, plus electrolytes in hot weather
  • A small snack, sun protection, and bug protection
  • Weather-ready layers you can remove or add
  • Any personal medication you normally carry
  • A charged phone, while expecting limited service on some trails

The event-specific packing list always wins. A paved wellness walk and a steep north Georgia trail do not call for the same preparation.

04 · Arrive

Come early enough to exhale.

Aim to park, use the restroom if one is available, and meet the group before the published start. The host reviews the route, conditions, and regroup plan. Introductions are natural, not an audition; coming alone is normal.

05 · Move

The point is the crew, not the clock.

ABH regroups and finishes together. Faster hikers may wait at planned points, and anyone having an off day should say so early. Quiet is welcome. Conversation is welcome. Respect for names, boundaries, bodies, and the public land around us is required.

06 · Return

Let the first hike be the beginning.

Eat, rehydrate, check for ticks, and give your body a little recovery time. If ABH asks for feedback or a photo release, both are optional. A newsletter opt-in is separate from an RSVP; choose it only if you want future notes.
